More than 1,100 people worldwide took part in Gebrüder Weiss’ GWcycles cycling campaign over the past several months. Together, they covered more than 1.6 million kilometers, setting a new record for the initiative. The campaign also supported the removal of ten metric tons of plastic waste from coastal areas and rivers.

Since 2022, Gebrüder Weiss has organized GWcycles as an international campaign open to anyone who enjoys cycling. Whether commuting, training, or riding for fun, every kilometer counts. Participants track their distances through an app, contributing to a shared total. The initiative aims to encourage people worldwide to be more physically active while supporting projects that benefit the environment.

This year’s campaign ran under the theme “Cycling for the Seas.” Working with environmental partner CleanHub, Gebrüder Weiss made it possible to remove ten metric tons of plastic waste from coastal areas and rivers particularly affected by plastic pollution. The campaign combined physical activity with a tangible contribution to environmental protection.

Participation was stronger than ever: The original target of one million kilometers was reached already in August. By the time the campaign ended in late October, participants had added more than 600,000 kilometers. In total, the 1,141 participants covered 1,644,702 kilometers – equivalent to circling the Earth more than 41 times.

“What is particularly impressive is that motivation remained strong even after the original goal had been reached. Participants stayed fully engaged right through the final day. This shows just how firmly GWcycles has established itself as an international initiative,” says Peter Schafleitner, Member of the Management Board of Gebrüder Weiss.

GWcycles is open to people of all ages. Participants log their kilometers individually or together with friends and colleagues. In recognition of their achievements, they receive rewards, which in 2026 were made entirely from recycled materials for the first time.

With its fifth edition, GWcycles achieved its strongest results to date, demonstrating how successfully the initiative has brought together physical activity, community, and sustainability.
