As of 1 October 2026, a distance-based toll system for trucks with a maximum authorised mass of more than 3.5 tons was introduced in Romania. The new system replaces the former "Rovinieta" vignette scheme for trucks.
With this change, Romania implements EU requirements and follows the polluter-pays principle already applied in other European countries such as Hungary, Germany, Austria, and Poland, where vehicles with lower emissions are subject to lower toll charges.
The toll applies to motorways, expressways, and national roads (exception: sections of national roads located within urban areas).
The toll amount payable is determined by the distance travelled on the respective road category, the vehicle type (emission category), and the vehicle's EURO emission class.
