Solving Cross-Border Logistics Complexities

May 22, 2024

Efficient cross-border logistics are crucial to seamless global supply chain operations. Facilitating international trade requires expert-level knowledge of intricate regulations, compliance requirements, customs procedures, tariffs, quality standards, and transportation complexities. What’s more, global demand for nearshoring has created significant geographic shifts in manufacturing and distribution. Gebrüder Weiss is leading the industry with cross-border logistics strategies that provide geographic advantages to customers and expedite the movement of freight across the border.

Accelerated Trade Growth Between the U.S. and Mexico

Demand for trade between the U.S. and Mexico has exploded in the past few years. In 2023, trade between the U.S. and Mexico was valued at a record-breaking $798.83 billion (source: Forbes), up from $779.3 billion in 2022, and $58.7 billion in 2021. Laredo, Texas, is the largest inland port in the critical Mexico/U.S. trade route, responsible for roughly 40% of all trade between the two countries. Millions of trucks pass through Laredo each year, moving approximately $800 million of products daily.

To facilitate cross-border trade for its customers, Gebrüder Weiss opened a 16,200 square-foot Laredo office and a 30,548 square-foot facility in El Paso, complete with a cross-dock warehouse to handle northbound and southbound cargo and support commercial trucks crossing the border daily. The offices are hazmat-certified and equipped to process both bonded and general cargo. The locations also feature a Mexican customs brokerage for import/export and a U.S. customs brokerage for import/export, customs clearance, and in-bond freight. Both offices are designed to streamline North American trade while expanding the gateway to trade from Latin America and Asia.

Global Connectivity

Today, approximately 70% of international trade involves global value chains (source: OECD) with multiple components of a final product sourced from different locations. Having nine out of ten parts ready for assembly while the tenth item is stuck at the border can shut down an entire operation. With components and products sourced from diverse countries, the seamless movement of goods is essential for maintaining cost-effectiveness, timeliness, and reliability.

To manage high-volume shipping routes and optimize global connectivity, Gebrüder Weiss opened a new Miami office that serves as a key staging center for a widespread international customer base. The Miami location streamlines trade routes for Latin American and Central American customers and provides a consolidation gateway for cargo out of Asia.
