According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the national average price for on-highway diesel fell to $6.199 per gallon for the week of Oct. 5, 2026, down 18.3 cents from $6.382 the previous week. Prices are still $2.488 per gallon higher than at this time last year.

Higher diesel prices are showing up in fuel surcharges and carrier operating costs, particularly on long-haul full truckload (FTL) moves. Some fuel surcharge tables have already exceeded $1 per mile, adding more pressure to transportation budgets and making freight spend harder to forecast.

Carriers are also managing higher operating costs, which can influence pricing, equipment utilization and network decisions as Q4 volumes increase.

Gebrüder Weiss is working with customers to review FTL, less-than-truckload (LTL) and rail intermodal options based on the shipment, lane, transit requirements and cost. As over-the-road costs remain elevated, intermodal is an increasingly important option to evaluate.

When Does Intermodal Freight Make Sense?

Intermodal can be a strong option when shipment and lane characteristics support rail service.

Intermodal should be considered when:

Freight moves over longer distances

Shipments follow consistent lanes and schedules

Transit time allows for rail service

FTL costs have increased

Volumes are predictable enough to plan ahead

FTL remains better suited for shipments that require direct transportation, faster transit or greater scheduling flexibility. LTL may be a better fit for smaller shipments that do not require a full trailer.

Intermodal is not the right fit for every shipment. Origin and destination, rail availability, shipment characteristics and delivery requirements all need to be considered.

Three Ways to Manage Higher Freight Costs

1. Review Long-Haul Lanes for Intermodal

Start with recurring long-distance FTL lanes and compare current transportation costs with available intermodal options. Moving eligible shipments to rail intermodal can help offset higher fuel-related transportation costs.

2. Consolidate Freight Where Possible

Shipment size and timing also affect transportation spend. Combining smaller shipments can improve trailer utilization and reduce the number of individual moves.

Reviewing shipment schedules may identify opportunities to consolidate freight or choose between LTL and FTL more efficiently.

3. Look Beyond the Individual Rate

The lowest rate on a single shipment does not always produce the lowest overall transportation cost.

Routing, distribution points and inventory locations determine how many miles freight travels. Reviewing the broader network can identify unnecessary mileage and opportunities to reduce transportation costs through routing, consolidation or mode changes.

How Gebrüder Weiss Supports Intermodal and Ground Transportation

Gebrüder Weiss supports customers across North America with FTL, LTL and rail intermodal transportation. The team evaluates shipment requirements and transportation options to help customers choose the mode that best fits their cost and service needs.

For companies with broader supply chain requirements, these services can also connect with cross-border transportation, international freight and warehousing. By coordinating these services through one representative, shippers have a single point of contact across multiple transportation needs.

Review Freight Options Before Q4 Volumes Increase

Higher diesel prices make this a good time to take a closer look at transportation costs and determine whether existing shipping patterns still make sense.

Gebrüder Weiss can help identify opportunities across FTL, LTL and intermodal while balancing cost and service requirements. In domestic North American service, freight typically moves by truck to a rail terminal, travels long distances by rail, and is delivered by truck at the destination.

Can intermodal reduce transportation costs?

It can on certain long-haul lanes. Savings depend on distance, route, shipment requirements, available capacity, FTL rates and rail pricing.

When should a shipper consider intermodal instead of FTL?

Intermodal is most relevant for longer-distance freight with predictable schedules and some transit-time flexibility. Time-sensitive shipments may be better suited for FTL.

How do diesel prices affect FTL freight costs?

Higher diesel prices can increase carrier operating costs and fuel surcharges, particularly on long-haul shipments.

Can a company use both FTL and intermodal?

Yes. Many transportation networks use multiple modes, with FTL serving time-sensitive or direct shipments and intermodal handling qualifying long-haul freight.

blog article

Customs clearance, inspections and congestion can affect transit times, but many problems begin before the truck reaches a port of entry or after the freight has already cleared.

A cross-border shipment may involve a shipper, customs broker, Mexican carrier, U.S. carrier, drayage provider, warehouse and final receiving facility. Each transition depends on accurate information and precise timing. When one party is not prepared for the next step, freight can lose hours or even days.

For shippers, improving performance means looking beyond the border itself and examining where responsibility changes hands. A 3PL experienced in U.S.-Mexico cross-border logistics can help connect those stages so the shipment moves as one coordinated process.

2. Mexican Customs Broker Setup Must Happen Before Shipping Begins

One of the most important cross-border decisions occurs before the first shipment is booked: selecting and onboarding the Mexican customs broker.

Based on Gebrüder Weiss’s operational experience, setting up a standard Mexican customs broker typically takes four to eight weeks. By comparison, a U.S. customs broker can often be established in a week or less. The process is highly asymmetric because the two countries operate under different regulatory and legal frameworks.

That difference matters. Before freight moves into or out of Mexico, the appropriate Mexican customs broker must be selected, authorized and fully prepared to handle the shipment. When that work begins too late, freight may be delayed, held at the border or exposed to fines and other compliance consequences.

Mexican customs brokers, known as agentes aduanales, also assume significant legal responsibility for the entries they process. They are responsible for verifying tariff classifications, calculating applicable duties and taxes, and confirming compliance with Mexican customs and regulatory requirements. Because brokers may share financial liability with the importer for classification errors, unpaid duties and other violations, they need complete and accurate product information before accepting a shipment.

Product descriptions, tariff classifications, country of origin, valuation and any applicable Mexican standards should therefore be addressed during onboarding, not after the freight is already moving.

Shippers planning northbound or southbound freight should ask their 3PL how early the Mexican customs broker needs to be selected, what documentation is required and who will coordinate the onboarding process. The customs and import compliance process should be part of the transportation plan from the beginning.

3. Carrier Transitions Can Disrupt an Otherwise Smooth Move

Cross-border transportation often involves different carriers, drivers or equipment in Mexico and the United States. That makes the transfer between transportation providers a critical point in the journey.

A late arrival on one side can affect the scheduled pickup on the other. Changes in clearance timing, incorrect transfer information or poor communication about freight availability can also lead to missed connections.

Both transportation legs should be coordinated as part of the same shipment. Pickup timing, transfer points, clearance status and equipment availability need to be visible to the parties responsible for what happens next.

Digital visibility can help. Turvo provides shipment status, location and ETA information, giving teams greater visibility as freight moves between stages.

The value of visibility is not simply knowing that a shipment is delayed. It is having enough information to adjust the next step before one problem creates another.

4. Drayage, Transloading and Cross-Docking Require Precise Timing

Freight may pass through additional operations in the border region, including drayage, trailer transfers, transloading or cross-docking. These services can improve flexibility, but every additional transfer creates another opportunity for freight to sit.

A truck may arrive before dock space is available. Freight may be unloaded before the outbound carrier is ready. Labor or equipment may not be scheduled when the shipment reaches the facility.

Reducing dwell requires coordination among inbound transportation, warehouse operations and the outbound move. Facilities need advance information about what is arriving, when it is expected and where the freight needs to go next.

Cross-docking works best when inbound and outbound schedules are aligned so freight moves through the facility instead of waiting for its next connection.

5. Final Delivery Planning Should Begin Before Customs Clearance

Clearing customs does not mean the shipment is finished.

Warehouses and distribution centers may have appointment requirements, limited receiving hours, labor constraints or specific inbound procedures. If those requirements are addressed only after clearance, freight can lose additional time waiting for delivery.

Final delivery requirements should be confirmed earlier in the transportation plan. Updated ETAs should also reach receiving facilities quickly, particularly when shipments support production schedules, retail commitments or other time-sensitive operations.

A shipment that clears the border efficiently but cannot be received at destination is still delayed.

Questions to Ask Your 3PL About Cross-Border Freight

Shippers evaluating their U.S.-Mexico freight process should ask:

Are shipment documents reviewed before freight begins moving toward the border?

Has the appropriate Mexican customs broker been selected and fully onboarded four to eight weeks before the first planned shipment?

Who coordinates our carriers, customs brokers and warehouse teams when plans change?

How are Mexican and U.S. transportation providers connected during the transfer?

How are drayage, transloading and cross-docking coordinated with the next transportation leg?

Who confirms the receiving facility is prepared before freight arrives?

The answers can reveal whether a shipment is being managed as one continuous process or as a series of disconnected services.

Frequently Asked Questions About U.S.-Mexico Cross-Border Freight

What causes delays in U.S.-Mexico cross-border shipping?

Delays can result from incomplete documentation, a Mexican customs broker that has not been fully onboarded, classification or compliance questions, carrier transfers, congestion, poorly coordinated transloading or cross-docking, and receiving facilities that are not prepared for delivery. Many delays begin before the freight reaches the physical border.

How far in advance should a Mexican customs broker be established?

Based on Gebrüder Weiss’s operational experience, setting up a standard Mexican customs broker typically takes four to eight weeks, while establishing a U.S. customs broker can often take a week or less. Shippers should begin the Mexican broker onboarding process well before the first shipment is scheduled.

How can shippers reduce cross-border freight delays?

Preparing documentation early, selecting and onboarding the appropriate Mexican customs broker, coordinating brokers and carriers, maintaining visibility across the shipment and planning warehouse and final delivery requirements in advance can reduce avoidable delays.

What should shippers look for in a cross-border 3PL?

Look for a 3PL that can coordinate transportation, customs brokerage, border operations and final delivery as one connected process. Clear communication, shipment visibility and a single point of contact can help reduce gaps between providers.

Strengthen the Connections to Keep Freight Moving

Some cross-border delays cannot be eliminated, but shippers can reduce delays caused by disconnected processes.

Gebrüder Weiss supports U.S.-Mexico freight with cross-border transportation, customs brokerage and warehouse services, including operations in key border markets such as Laredo and El Paso. By connecting these stages through one logistics partner, shippers can strengthen critical transfer points, improve shipment visibility and keep freight moving from origin to destination.

blog article

Speed and pricing often dominated procurement discussions, especially during periods of stable capacity and predictable trade conditions.

That environment has changed.

Today’s global supply chains face a combination of shifting tariffs, geopolitical uncertainty, tighter compliance requirements, labor disruptions, weather events, and rapidly changing customer expectations. In this environment, the lowest-cost option is not always the lowest-risk option.

At Gebrüder Weiss, we’re seeing this shift firsthand. Shippers are increasingly asking not just what a move will cost, but what happens when something goes wrong, and whether their air freight partner can handle it.

The true cost of unreliable air freight

Air freight is often used for high-priority shipments where delays carry significant consequences. A missed delivery can disrupt manufacturing schedules, delay product launches, impact customer relationships, or create costly downstream inventory challenges.

In many cases, the financial impact of a disruption extends far beyond the transportation rate itself.

Businesses are increasingly evaluating the total operational cost of inconsistent service, including:

Delayed production timelines

Lost sales opportunities

Inventory imbalances

Additional storage and expedited shipping costs

Customer dissatisfaction

Increased internal labor spent managing exceptions

What Shippers Need from an Air Cargo Partner
Resilient logistics partnerships go beyond transportation capacity. When disruptions hit, such as tightening capacity, shifting trade regulations, or weather events, shippers need partners that can adapt quickly and communicate clearly. That’s especially true in air freight, where compressed timelines mean small problems escalate fast.

Key capabilities to look for:

Consistent communication

Real-time shipment visibility'

Proactive issue resolution

Strong carrier relationships

Customs and compliance expertise

Flexible routing options

Scalable support during disruptions

Why technology and human expertise both matter in air freight logistics

Technology continues to improve visibility and operational efficiency throughout the air cargo sector. Automated workflows, shipment-tracking platforms, AI-supported analytics, and digital communication tools are helping logistics providers respond more quickly and improve coordination.

These tools are valuable, but technology alone cannot manage every supply chain disruption.

Air cargo operations still depend heavily on experienced teams that can make informed decisions during rapidly changing situations. Delays, customs holds, weather events, and routing adjustments often require human judgment, industry relationships, and operational experience.

The most effective strategies combine both: digital tools for visibility and speed, experienced teams for judgment when things don’t go to plan.

Flexibility as a supply chain advantage

Seasonal demand spikes, sourcing shifts, tariff changes, and inventory adjustments can all create sudden transportation pressure. Logistics providers that can scale capacity, coordinate multimodal options, and adjust routing strategies quickly give shippers a meaningful operational edge.

At Gebrüder Weiss, our integrated approach, combining air freight forwarding, cross-border logistics, customs brokerage, and contract logistics, is designed to give customers the flexibility they need when market conditions shift.

Air freight reliability frequently asked questions

Why are shippers prioritizing reliability over cost in air freight?

Transportation disruptions can create costs that far exceed any freight rate savings, such as delayed production, inventory shortages, missed schedules, and customer service failures, all of which carry real financial impact. Reliable air freight execution reduces these risks and protects long-term operational performance.

What makes an air freight partnership resilient?

A resilient air freight partnership combines operational consistency, proactive communication, real-time shipment visibility, and flexible routing options. Customs expertise and the ability to adapt quickly during disruptions or market changes are equally critical, especially for companies managing complex international freight flows.

How does technology improve air freight reliability?

Technology improves shipment visibility, automates workflows, and supports faster decision-making. But experienced logistics professionals remain essential for managing exceptions, disruptions, and complex international shipping requirements, underscoring the value of combining digital tools with operational expertise.

Why is flexibility important in air freight logistics?

Global supply chains face constant pressure from shifting tariffs, weather events, geopolitical disruptions, and fluctuating demand. Flexible logistics providers can adjust transportation strategies, secure alternative capacity, and maintain supply chain continuity when conditions change unexpectedly.

What should companies look for in an air freight provider?

Evaluate operational reliability, communication practices, global network strength, customs and compliance expertise, scalability, and the provider’s ability to respond during disruptions. After a prolonged freight recession that gave many shippers more leverage in rate negotiations, capacity is becoming more selective, carrier operating costs are rising and routing guides that performed well in a softer market are showing signs of stress.

For shippers, the change is not simply a budgeting issue. Rising truckload rates affect procurement strategy, service reliability, lead times and transportation risk.

The better approach is to treat the current market as an inflection point. Companies that plan early can still protect service levels and reduce disruption. If your transportation network is seeing more rejected tenders, higher backup-carrier usage or unexpected spot exposure, this is the time to contact Gebrüder Weiss to review at-risk lanes before service is affected.

Carrier costs have reset the rate floor

One of the clearest signals is the cost required to operate a truck. CCJ Digital, citing JBF Consulting, reported that new-equipment truckload breakeven costs reached $3.12 per mile in Q2 2026. That estimate is 36 cents higher than August 2025, a 13 percent increase.

Diesel is a major driver of that increase. Fuel now represents a larger share of carrier operating costs, and rapid diesel price spikes can quickly change the economics of a lane. Beyond fuel, carriers are also absorbing higher labor, insurance and equipment expenses.

Rates cannot stay below operating costs indefinitely. When carriers cannot cover their costs, capacity exits the market, carriers become more selective or pricing rises.

Routing guides are under pressure

A second warning sign is the condition of routing guides. Some rates established during early-year bids are already being challenged by changing market conditions. When carriers reject more contracted freight, shippers must move deeper into their routing guides or use the spot market.

Elevated tender rejections show where contract pricing no longer reflects the market. In some regions and equipment types, the pressure is even more pronounced.

The result is a reliability problem. A shipper may have a contracted rate on paper, but if the carrier will not accept the load at that rate, the real cost becomes the rate required to move the freight on time.

Capacity tightening is more than seasonal

Seasonal freight patterns still matter, particularly around produce, retail promotions, weather events and peak shipping periods. But the current environment also reflects structural pressure in the carrier base.

Compliance enforcement, driver qualification issues, insurance pressure and fleet operating costs are reducing the number of carriers that brokers and shippers can confidently use. The May 2026 Supreme Court decision in Montgomery v. Caribe Transport II, LLC also increased attention on broker liability and carrier selection.

As carrier vetting becomes more rigorous, pricing may reflect not only truck availability, but also the cost of securing compliant, dependable capacity.

What shippers should do now

Shippers do not need to overhaul every lane at once, but they should pressure-test their transportation strategy before the market tightens further.

Review routing-guide performance by lane, including tender acceptance, backup carrier usage, late pickups, spot exposure and accessorial trends.

Build more realistic freight budgets that account for fuel, equipment type, region and seasonality.

Prioritize carrier quality and compliance. They need a logistics partner that can evaluate capacity options, manage compliance and help align transportation decisions with business priorities.

As the world’s oldest logistics company, with more than 500 years of experience, Gebrüder Weiss supports customers with truckload solutions designed around reliable capacity, vetted carrier relationships and proactive account management. This includes full truckload, less-than-truckload, cross-border transportation, contract logistics and integrated supply chain support.

The advantage is not only access to trucks. It is the ability to bring structure to a volatile market and recommend practical options before disruption reaches the shipment level.

Frequently asked questions

Are truckload rates expected to keep rising?

Current market signals point to continued upward pressure, especially where capacity is tight, fuel costs remain elevated or tender rejections are increasing.

Why are contract rates not always protecting shippers?

Contract rates depend on carrier acceptance. When market rates move above contracted pricing, carriers may reject freight, forcing shippers to use backup carriers or the spot market.

What should shippers prioritize first?

Start with the lanes where service failures would have the greatest impact. Review routing-guide performance, tender acceptance and backup capacity, then adjust planning assumptions where risk is highest.

Plan now for a tighter truckload market

The return of rising truckload rates does not mean shippers are without options. It does mean that old procurement assumptions need to be revisited. In a tighter market, the lowest rate is not always the lowest-risk choice, and the strongest transportation strategies will balance cost, capacity, compliance and service reliability.

If rising rates, rejected tenders or spot-market exposure are affecting your transportation plan, contact Gebrüder Weiss to review your truckload strategy and identify practical options for keeping freight moving.

blog article

The site is already served by a funicular railway with two railcars operating between the base and summit stations. Austrian cable-car specialist Doppelmayr is now adding a modern aerial cable-car system. Gebrüder Weiss managed the transportation of the cable car components: more than 60 containers were loaded at Doppelmayr’s production facility in Wolfurt, Austria, and transferred to the nearby freight terminal. From there, the cargo traveled by rail to Hamburg before continuing by sea to Southeast Asia. In Malaysia, Gebrüder Weiss operates three locations: Penang, Kuala Lumpur, and Johor Bahru.

“Managing a multimodal project of this scale requires precise coordination. Every transport mode must be carefully synchronized, and weather conditions at the ports must be closely monitored to avoid delays and additional costs,” says Michael Kramer, key account manager Air & Sea at Gebrüder Weiss in Wolfurt. “Having our own locations at both ends of the supply chain was a major advantage. The teams in Wolfurt and Penang worked seamlessly together, ensuring that the entire shipment stayed on schedule.”

The containers were shipped from Austria to Malaysia in several partial consignments according to a fixed delivery schedule. The digits colored in American, Mexican, Canadian flags to represent the 2026 FIFA World Cup." width="800" height="auto">
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will bring millions of visitors to North America this summer, creating one of the largest regional logistics events in recent years. While the focus will remain on the matches and host cities, the tournament is influencing transportation networks, inventory movement, and regional distribution across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. For most businesses, strategic planning ended months ago, inventory is ordered, contracts are in place, and seasonal merchandise is moving through supply chains. Companies are now focused on execution: balancing inventory, monitoring transportation capacity, and responding to shifting demand patterns across key markets. The impact will not be uniform, with some freight lanes and distribution hubs already seeing higher demand as hospitality, retail, food service, and event operations compete for transportation and warehousing capacity.

Freight Capacity Pressure Is Concentrated Around Key Host Markets

The 11 U.S. host cities, including Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Seattle, and the New York/New Jersey metro, will absorb the majority of World Cup freight activity through mid-July. Markets already operating as major transportation and distribution hubs may experience tighter truckload and reefer capacity as hospitality, food service, and retail replenishment volumes increase around match periods. Truckload and expedited freight networks face the greatest strain where visitor volumes and venue operations are highest, and last-mile delivery is becoming more congested as retailers, restaurants, and entertainment venues manage faster inventory turnover.

Air freight is also expected to remain elevated for time-sensitive shipments of promotional products, licensed merchandise, and fast-moving consumer goods.

Key pressure points include:

Airports and air cargo facilities

Regional distribution centers

Intermodal hubs

Major highway corridors

Urban last-mile delivery routes

Businesses managing high-volume freight flows should:

Review backup carrier options

Increase shipment visibility

Stage inventory closer to high-demand markets

Evaluate multimodal transportation alternatives

Cross-Border Logistics Are Operating on Tighter Timelines

Because the World Cup spans three countries, cross-border freight movement is a critical operational consideration this summer. Toronto and Vancouver will host 13 matches between them, while Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey will absorb additional freight activity tied to hospitality, retail, and event operations. Cross-border replenishment cycles are moving on tighter timelines than usual, and a customs delay that might normally cause a minor disruption can become more significant as delivery windows compress.

Companies with customs documentation processes and contingency plans already in place will be better positioned to navigate changing transportation conditions during peak periods. Integrated cross-border planning, covering transportation and customs coordination across all three countries, helps reduce delays when freight flows tighten. Gebrüder Weiss cross-border logistics solutions provide connected regional coverage.

Inventory Positioning Is Shaping Regional Distribution Performance

Businesses relying entirely on centralized distribution models may face longer inventory lead times if congestion develops near major host markets. Companies that positioned inventory closer to high-demand regions earlier in the year, particularly across Texas, Florida, Southern California, and the Northeast Corridor, will have shorter, more controllable delivery cycles during the World Cup window. Regional warehousing and fulfillment strategies are helping businesses shorten replenishment cycles, improve delivery consistency, reduce expedited shipping costs, and manage demand spikes more efficiently. Gebrüder Weiss contract logistics services include warehousing, fulfillment, and inventory coordination, designed to support changing regional distribution needs.

Which Industries Are Seeing the Greatest Logistics Pressure?

Several sectors are experiencing the most pronounced impact. Food and beverage distributors are already seeing increased regional demand near host cities and entertainment districts. Retailers and apparel companies may see spikes tied to licensed merchandise and World Cup-related consumer spending, while hospitality suppliers face faster replenishment cycles as hotels, restaurants, and venues prepare for higher visitor volumes. Consumer packaged goods manufacturers, electronics suppliers, and promotional merchandise companies could also face increased transportation and fulfillment requirements, making the core challenge one of balancing higher sales opportunities against transportation reliability and inventory availability.

Execution Matters More Than Perfect Forecasting

With freight volumes increasing across key North American markets, supply chain teams are focusing on maintaining shipment visibility, monitoring regional inventory levels, identifying alternative routing options, and reducing reaction time when disruptions occur. Connected transportation systems and real-time visibility tools are helping businesses respond quickly when regional conditions shift unexpectedly. Organizations with stronger shipment visibility, flexible transportation options, and coordinated cross-border operations will be better positioned to adapt as conditions evolve during peak activity periods.

For organizations evaluating regional distribution, cross-border freight movement, or transportation capacity needs, Gebrüder Weiss provides integrated freight forwarding, warehousing, customs brokerage, and transportation services across North America and globally. Contact us to learn more.

Frequently Asked Questions About the 2026 World Cup and Logistics

How will the 2026 FIFA World Cup affect freight and shipping capacity in the U.S.?

Freight demand is rising near the 11 U.S. host cities, with the greatest pressure on truckload, reefer, expedited freight, and last-mile delivery networks. Hospitality, food service, and retail replenishment are the primary drivers. Capacity is tightest in markets like Dallas, Houston, Miami, Los Angeles, and the New York/New Jersey metro.

Which U.S. cities will see the most supply chain disruption during the 2026 World Cup?

Markets that are both host cities and major distribution hubs face the most pressure, particularly Dallas, Houston, Miami, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Seattle, and the New York/New Jersey metro. These markets handle significant freight volume year-round, and tournament activity will compound existing demand.

How should businesses prepare their supply chains for a major international sporting event?

The most effective steps are positioning inventory closer to demand before peak periods begin, securing backup carrier options, increasing shipment visibility, and having contingency plans for customs and cross-border delays. Businesses that act early on transportation and warehousing decisions are better insulated from last-minute capacity shortages.

Will cross-border shipping between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico be affected during the 2026 World Cup?

Yes. Because all three countries are hosting matches, replenishment cycles are running on tighter timelines across North America. Customs delays that would normally be minor can have a larger impact when delivery windows are compressed. Businesses with documentation processes and contingency plans already in place are better positioned to manage disruptions.

What industries are most affected by logistics disruptions during large sporting events?

Food and beverage, retail and apparel, hospitality supply, consumer packaged goods, and promotional merchandise are typically the sectors that see the greatest impact. These sectors face higher inventory turnover, tighter replenishment windows, and increased competition for transportation capacity near event markets.

blog article

CEO Wolfram Senger-Weiss, Vorarlberg Governor Markus Wallner and Wolfurt Mayor Angelika Moosbrugger attended the opening ceremony alongside about 250 guests from business and government. During the event, the company demonstrated its automated warehouse systems by retrieving specially designed pallets holding gifts at the push of a button and delivering them to the stage, where they were presented to guests.

In his opening remarks, Senger-Weiss stressed the significance of the new location, which is intended to deliver efficient processes and long-term growth. "The Logistics and IT Center represents a momentous step forward for our organization. We are making this investment in full awareness of the economically challenging environment; we are creating infrastructure that is designed for a period of decades," said the CEO. "The integration of IT with logistics enables us to further advance key processes, making supply chains even more transparent and secure for our customers."

The expansion simultaneously reinforces the Vorarlberg location and its status as a major crossroads for the international flow of goods. At the opening ceremony, Gov. Wallner underscored the implications of the project for the region: "This investment is a clear commitment to Vorarlberg as a business location. High-powered logistics are the lifeblood of our export-oriented economy, and they strengthen our industries' competitiveness in the global market."

Integrated location with optimized space efficiency
The Logistics and IT Center offers a total area of some 31,000 square meters and its design rigorously follows a holistic concept. The logistics, office and technology sections are housed vertically, facilitating the efficient use of the scarce land resources available in Austria’s Rheintal region. In terms of its functionality, it compares to a significantly larger, conventional logistics area but has a far smaller footprint.

In addition to the automated high-bay warehouse with its capacity of 68,000 pallets, the center also includes a manual warehouse and a three-story office building for some 400 employees. This is home to the central Gebrüder Weiss IT unit, along with staff from the logistics and other departments. The complex, therefore, serves as an integrated campus that forges closer links between its various functions, accelerating process optimization.

Automation: the platform for high-performance processes
With its 13 bays, the 34-meter-tall warehouse forms the heart of the complex. Its fully integrated intralogistics system independently controls the flow of goods. Up to 160 pallets can be stored and up to 200 pallets retrieved per hour, making the center one of the largest fully-automated facilities in Europe.

Autonomous storage and retrieval technology, autonomous conveyance vehicles, and digitally guided materials-handling equipment all feature within this environment. Even before construction commenced, the entire system was simulated and optimized using a digital twin. However, people still play key roles: employees monitor and manage the processes, intervening when necessary.

"Automation and data-based systems are crucial components of supply chains, keeping them stable and running efficiently even under fluctuating conditions. They enhance process speed and transparency. But in the end, the human being is still at the helm, verifying the processes and assuming responsibility," comments Senger-Weiss.

Strategic choice of location and sustainable construction methods
The primary advantage of the site is its close proximity to the Wolfurt cargo terminal, which enables the efficient coupling of road and rail transport, and helps to reduce emissions and traffic congestion. At the same time, Gebrüder Weiss customers profit from the location, which, being close to the borders of Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and Germany, is a crossroads and interface for mainstream European merchandise flows.

Sustainability also factored into both the construction and operation of the campus. For instance, reduced-CO₂ concrete was used; producing it releases about 35% less carbon dioxide than with traditional materials. The energy concept is supplemented by a photovoltaic system that generates some 1.5 megawatts of peak power, green roofs, and initial charging infrastructure for electric-powered vehicles.

Milestone in corporate history
A total investment volume of approximately 100 million euros makes the Logistics and IT Center an integral component of the long-term site and growth strategy at Gebrüder Weiss.

"But this construction project marks more than a new stage in the evolution of our organization," Senger-Weiss says. "Here we are consolidating the merchandise flows of the region's entire export industry and providing a launchpad for its worldwide distribution. By meshing logistics capacity with state-of-the-art automation technology, it will deliver greater efficiency and transparency for our customers, thereby also multiplying the location's competitiveness."

The logistical and technical standards applied in this project will provide the blueprint for future site expansions. An additional automated logistics terminal is currently being planned at the Swiss location in Pratteln, near Basel, and it will be based on this template.

Facts: Logistics and IT Center Vorarlberg

Location: Hohe Brücke Industrial Zone, Wolfurt, Vorarlberg, Austria
Investment: Approximately 100 million euros
Construction period: April 2024 – February 2026

Space & Capacity:

Total area: 30,800 m²

Logistics area: 24,000 m²

Jobs: about 400

Integrates logistics, IT and central corporate divisions at one location for the first time

Technology & Automation:

High-bay warehouse: 34 meters tall, 68,000 pallet capacity

Automated intralogistics systems in operation: 13 automatic storage and retrieval systems, 33 autonomous conveyance vehicles

8 order-picking stations with elevating and lowering tables and other lifting equipment

Location & Transport links:

In the immediate vicinity of the Wolfurt cargo terminal, a combined road-rail connection

Located near the juncture of four European countries, close to major central European transport routes

Sustainability:

Low-carbon concrete (-35% emissions)

1.5 MWp photovoltaic system covers a major part of the company's own electricity needs

Green roofs and biodiversity projects (e.g., beekeeping)

Charging infrastructure for electric vehicles

The sprinkler tank doubles as a heat reservoir

Subsidies for public transportation, no expansive parking lots

News

For importers, this creates an opportunity to recover funds more efficiently.

However, while the process is more streamlined on the backend, it also shifts more responsibility to importers to identify eligible entries, submit accurate data, and manage key timing considerations. For customers seeking additional support, Gebrüder Weiss offers comprehensive CAPE filing guidance, including eligibility evaluation, submission support, and refund tracking, with added coordination across complex scenarios such as multi-broker environments and evolving CBP requirements.

Where Execution Becomes Challenging

Submitting a CAPE declaration requires compiling entry numbers into a CSV file and uploading them through the ACE portal. The system then validates each entry against a series of requirements, removing any that do not meet eligibility criteria.

On the surface, this may seem straightforward. In practice, the process requires ongoing coordination and attention to detail, especially as CBP guidance continues to evolve.

Common challenges include:

• Identifying which historical entries qualify for IEEPA refunds

• Ensuring data accuracy to avoid validation errors

• Managing rejected entries and resubmissions

• Coordinating submissions across multiple systems or teams

• Tracking entry status and refund progress across multiple filings

Evaluating CAPE filings or refund eligibility?
For customers seeking additional support, Gebrüder Weiss can provide submission strategy, validation oversight, and ongoing tracking to help keep refunds on schedule. What is CAPE and how does it affect my refunds?

CAPE is CBP’s system for processing IEEPA duty refunds. It consolidates eligible refunds into a single payment and includes interest, replacing the traditional entry-by-entry refund process.

2. Do I need to file for refunds myself?

Importers can submit CAPE filings directly through the ACE portal. Some choose to engage additional support to help evaluate entries, prepare submissions, and monitor progress.

3. How do I know if my entries are eligible for a refund?

Eligibility depends on whether IEEPA duties were applied and whether entries meet CBP validation criteria. A structured review of historical entries is typically required.

4. What is required to submit a CAPE filing?

A CSV file listing eligible entry numbers must be uploaded through ACE. The system validates each entry before accepting the submission.

5. How long will it take to receive a refund?

Most refunds are expected within 60–90 days after a CAPE submission is accepted, depending on entry status and processing timelines.

6. What happens if some of my entries are rejected?

Rejected entries can be corrected and resubmitted in a new CAPE declaration. Monitoring validation results helps minimize delays.

7. Should I withdraw an existing protest and use CAPE instead?

In some cases, withdrawing a protest and submitting through CAPE may result in faster refunds. This depends on timing and entry status.

8. Can Gebrüder Weiss support CAPE filings?

Yes. For customers seeking additional support, Gebrüder Weiss offers dedicated support for CAPE filings, including eligibility evaluation, submission planning, and ongoing refund tracking. Contact your representative to discuss the best path forward.

9. What are the most common challenges with CAPE?

Common challenges include identifying eligible entries, ensuring data accuracy, managing validation errors, and aligning submissions with liquidation timelines.

10. What should I do next?

While no immediate action is required, reviewing historical entries and preparing for submission now can help avoid delays. Some organizations choose to engage additional support to ensure the process is managed effectively.

blog article

What sets leading providers apart is not simply adopting these tools, but applying them in ways that deliver measurable improvements in execution, transparency, and cost management.

At Gebrüder Weiss, technologies such as Levity, Turvo, Highway, and Cargado are integrated into daily workflows to support more consistent, reliable outcomes for customers.

Streamlining Operations Through Automation

AI-driven automation is most effective in reducing manual workload across high-volume, repetitive processes.

Using tools like Levity, logistics teams can automate workflows driven by inbound emails and documents. The platform interprets unstructured data, extracts key shipment details, and triggers actions such as order creation, pricing requests, and invoice follow-ups without manual input.

Logistics teams can automate:

Document handling and data extraction

Order entry and system updates

Invoice and proof-of-delivery workflows

This shift allows operations teams to focus less on administrative tasks and more on managing exceptions, coordinating shipments, and supporting customers.

For shippers, the impact is straightforward: faster processing, fewer errors, and smoother execution across shipments.

Creating Real-Time Visibility Across Shipments

Reliable logistics depends on accurate, accessible information. Without it, even well-planned shipments can face avoidable disruptions.

Platforms like Turvo connect stakeholders through a shared system that provides:

Live shipment tracking

Milestone updates across modes

Centralized communication

In cross-border environments, tools such as Cargado improve coordination between carriers, brokers, and customs processes, where timing and documentation are critical.

This level of transparency enables earlier intervention when issues arise and supports more informed planning on the customer side.

Strengthening Carrier Quality and Network Integrity

As freight networks expand, so does the importance of working with verified, dependable carriers.

Technology platforms like Highway support this by continuously validating:

Carrier credentials and insurance

Compliance with operational standards

Potential fraud risks

This added layer of oversight helps reduce disruptions tied to unreliable partners and strengthens overall network performance.

Managing Costs Beyond Rate Negotiation

Focusing solely on freight rates often overlooks larger cost drivers within the supply chain.

AI and automation help control total landed cost by improving how shipments are executed. Fewer manual errors, earlier visibility into delays, and better coordination all contribute to avoiding unnecessary expenses.

For example, identifying a delay early can allow for route adjustments or customer communication, preventing costly last-minute interventions. Similarly, reducing administrative workload lowers overhead without impacting service quality.

Turning Data Into Better Decisions

Modern logistics platforms generate a continuous stream of operational data. When structured effectively, this data becomes a valuable tool for improving performance.

Integrated systems allow teams to:

Evaluate carrier and lane performance

Identify recurring inefficiencies

Recommend adjustments based on real-world trends

This supports a more proactive approach to managing transportation and supply chain strategy.

Balancing Technology with Operational Expertise

While automation improves speed and consistency, logistics still requires human judgment.

Experienced operators play a critical role in:

Handling complex or time-sensitive shipments

Interpreting customer priorities

Managing exceptions that fall outside standard workflows

Combining technology with operational expertise ensures that efficiency gains do not come at the expense of service quality.

Applying AI With Purpose

The effectiveness of AI in logistics is not determined by how many tools are deployed, but by how well they are aligned with operational needs.

By integrating platforms such as Levity, Turvo, Highway, and Cargado into core processes, Gebrüder Weiss focuses on practical improvements that enhance performance without adding unnecessary complexity.

For customers, this translates into more predictable operations, clearer visibility, and stronger cost control across the supply chain.

To learn how Gebrüder Weiss integrates technology with operational expertise, connect with our team or explore our logistics solutions.

blog article

Equipment choice influences everything from a shipment’s total cost to its routing options, cargo protection, regulatory requirements, and transit reliability. In today’s capacity-driven market, understanding trailer capabilities helps businesses avoid delays, reduce accessorial charges, and improve overall freight performance.

To make this process easier, Gebrüder Weiss created a Truck Trailer Types Guide, offering an accessible reference for shippers navigating the wide range of equipment used in North American transport.

Why Trailer Type Matters in a Tight Capacity Market

When capacity is limited, shippers who understand their equipment needs can source trucks more efficiently and negotiate better pricing. Incorrect trailer selection can result in extra handling, rework, or last-minute equipment changes that increase cost and extend lead times.

Several factors make trailer selection a strategic decision:

Freight characteristics: weight, height, length, fragility, and loading method

Regulatory considerations: permitting requirements for oversized or overweight cargo

Facility constraints: dock height, loading equipment, and maneuverability

Environmental conditions: temperature-controlled requirements for sensitive goods

Choosing the right trailer ensures the freight moves safely, compliantly, and on schedule.

Common Trailer Types and When to Use Them

Understanding the differences between major trailer types helps shippers match equipment to their cargo needs and avoid unnecessary delays or charges.

Dry Van

The most widely used trailer type, offering enclosed protection and broad availability.
Best for: Consumer goods, packaged items, electronics, pallets that require shelter from weather.

Conestoga

A flatbed with a rolling tarp system that allows open loading while protecting freight from the elements.
Best for: Cargo requiring flexible loading and full weather protection.

These categories represent only part of the equipment available to shippers. The full Trailer Types Guide includes additional configurations, dimensional details, and application notes to support more precise planning.

How Trailer Choice Affects Cost and Transit Performance

The type of trailer used directly influences a shipment’s financial and operational outcomes.

1. Total Cost of Transportation

Choosing the wrong trailer often results in repower fees, rescheduling, redelivery charges, or supplemental labor. Specialized equipment may also be in limited supply, increasing rates during peak periods.

2. Transit Time and Routing Flexibility

Equipment dictates whether certain routes, bridges, or urban areas are accessible.

For example:

Lowboys may require alternate routing for clearance

Reefers may need pre-cooling time before loading

Open-deck trailers may face weather-related restrictions

Better trailer alignment helps keep freight on schedule.

3. Freight Protection and Claims Prevention

Proper equipment selection reduces the risk of damage, spoilage, or load shifts. Securement, temperature control, and structural protection all play a role in claims prevention.

4. Efficiency at Pickup and Delivery

Selecting the correct equipment upfront ensures compatibility with facility layouts, dock operations, and handling requirements—preventing loading delays and rework.

Regulatory and Compliance Factors to Consider

Trailer type must also align with federal, state, and site-specific requirements. Key considerations include:

Over-dimensional permits for height, width, or weight

Securement standards for open-deck equipment

Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) requirements for temperature-sensitive goods

Bridge and roadway restrictions that impact routing

Facility-specific rules such as maneuvering limits or dock specifications

Addressing these factors early prevents costly last-minute adjustments.

How a 3PL Helps Shippers Navigate Equipment Selection

A third-party logistics provider simplifies the complexities of trailer planning by:

Identifying the most efficient equipment for each load

Sourcing reliable capacity across a national carrier network

Checking securement, weight distribution, and regulatory compliance

Coordinating permits for specialized, heavy, or oversized freight

Providing real-time updates through digital platforms

Managing exceptions and supporting communication through a single point of contact

This expertise enables shippers to reduce risk and ensure consistent, high-quality performance across every truckload.

Explore the Gebrüder Weiss Trailer Types Guide

Selecting the right trailer doesn’t have to be complicated. Despite the sluggish economy in Europe, the company secured further market share and simultaneously increased productivity.

"The economic climate proved challenging in 2025 – particularly in our core markets in Central Europe. The fact that we nonetheless posted growth, and were simultaneously able to continue investing, demonstrates the performance and financial strength of our organization,” says Wolfram Senger-Weiss, CEO of Gebrüder Weiss. "Europe continues to be the mainstay of our operations and the primary focus of our investments. At the same time, we’re tapping opportunities to strategically evolve our network in global growth markets."

As in the previous year, the equity ratio exceeded 60 percent, testifying to the company’s sound financial foundations. The number of employees remained stable at around 8,600 (2024: 8,600).

In its European land transport segment, Gebrüder Weiss posted a slight improvement with revenues of 1.55 billion euros or 1.8 billion dollars (2024: 1.52 billion euros). Although revenues in Germany were marginally down, the organization gained additional market share there. Gebrüder Weiss expanded its position in Eastern Europe as well. Home Delivery operations also benefitted, with the number of consignments rising again to 1.36 million (2024: 1.31 million).

The volumes transported by our Air & Sea division grew, particularly on routes between Europe and Asia and within Asia. In air freight, the higher volumes were powered primarily by e-commerce trade between China and Europe. Given the reduction in air and sea freight rates, revenues fell to 913 million euros or 1.06 billion dollars, slightly below the previous year's figure (2024: 929 million euros).

Gebrüder Weiss also posted gains in its logistics operations: revenues from contract logistics and supply chain management were seven percent higher at 147 million euros or 170 million dollars. In supply chain management, the company develops tailored solutions for customers and uses data-driven analytics to manage and optimize supply chains efficiently.

DPD Austria, which is partly owned by the Gebrüder Weiss parcel service, also reported growth. The number of parcels transported rose to 64.6 million – up 3.6 percent year-on-year (2024: 62.3 million).

Investments boost efficiency and the network

Gebrüder Weiss continued to pursue its expansion strategy in 2025. In Southeast Asia, it established new country organizations in Thailand and the Philippines. The acquisition of a majority stake in the company Sienzi Lojistik bolstered customs handling and warehouse logistics activities in Istanbul (Türkiye). In North America, a new location in Phoenix, Arizona, is facilitating growth in one of the company's core markets.

“Our focus in North America is simple: help our customers move goods with confidence, even in uncertain conditions,” said Mark McCullough, CEO of Gebrüder Weiss North America. “The opening of our Phoenix office last year strengthens our regional network and ensures we can continue delivering the reliable service our clients expect.”

In Europe, Gebrüder Weiss invested in the expansion of existing locations, including those in Zagreb (Croatia), Aldingen (Germany) and Wels in Austria; work also began on the extension of the Salzburg location. The new logistics and IT center in Wolfurt, Austria, commenced operation, bringing a major infrastructure project to completion. The fully automated high-bay warehouse combines modern logistics processes with advanced IT systems and high sustainability standards.

Investments in 2025 totaled 146 million euros or 169 million dollars, some 16 percent above the previous year's sum (2024: 126 million euros). Beyond financing the expansion of the network, the funds were devoted chiefly to automation and digitalization projects designed to improve productivity. This allowed the organization to successfully accommodate additional consignment volumes within its existing systems.

Sustainability anchored in corporate strategy

Gebrüder Weiss has anchored sustainability in its corporate strategy and, as part of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), committed itself to pursuing scientifically authenticated climate goals. During 2025, it continued to build on its climate strategy. Through the installation of additional modules, the total capacity of its photovoltaic systems climbed to 19.7 megawatt peak. The 15,000 megawatt-hours of electricity generated are equivalent to roughly half of the power requirements of all Gebrüder Weiss locations worldwide.

Furthermore, the organization added 14 more electric trucks to its fleet in Austria and expanded the charging infrastructure available. With transparent CO₂ reporting and a standardized model for offsetting sustainable fuels ("Book & Claim"), Gebrüder Weiss enables its customers to allocate emission reductions to individual consignments and thereby quantify their success in reaching climate goals.

"The uncertainties pervading global trade will continue to impact us all in 2026. The most recent escalation in the Middle East has further aggravated geopolitical tensions, demonstrating how quickly global supply chains can face disruption. During this current phase, stable transport networks and dependable partners have become imperatives. Gebrüder Weiss rests on a very solid financial foundation, is internationally operational, and invests strategically in both technology and infrastructure. This will equip us to continue supporting our clients in the challenging environments ahead as well,” says Wolfram Senger-Weiss.

News

As of January 1, 2026, Gebrüder Weiss has upgraded its Tashkent office from a representative office to a full national organization for Uzbekistan. With this expansion, Gebrüder Weiss is responding to the growing need for efficient logistics solutions in Uzbekistan. International customers as well as local companies increasingly require reliable transport and supply chain services in the country, particularly in the agricultural machinery sector. To support this demand, Gebrüder Weiss manages the transport of oversized agricultural and construction equipment to Central Asia.

“We continue to invest in Uzbekistan because we believe in the future of this market and want to support our customers in their expansion into Central Asia with reliable logistics processes,” says Thomas Moser, Regional Manager Black Sea/CIS at Gebrüder Weiss.

Uzbekistan’s economic upswing is indeed continuing. In 2025, gross domestic product grew by around seven percent compared to the previous year, while growth of approximately six percent is forecast for both 2026 and 2027. Industry, agriculture, and foreign trade are all on the rise. Reforms and tax incentives are making the country increasingly attractive to foreign investors and are driving demand for high-performance logistics and transport solutions.

Strengthening Eurasian land transport corridors
Uzbekistan is playing an increasingly important role in the flow of goods between Europe and Asia. Together with Gebrüder Weiss locations in Turkey, Georgia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, and China, the Central Asian country is strengthening Eurasian land routes. The company has been systematically expanding these connections for many years in order to offer businesses reliable alternatives to air and sea freight – particularly for large-volume industrial and agricultural goods.

The new national organization will be headed by Kamil Ernazarov, who has held a management position in Tashkent since 2019. He describes the situation in the country as follows: “Many companies in Uzbekistan are facing the challenge of making their supply chains more reliable and internationally competitive. With our expanded range of services, we can support them in a targeted manner.”

Gebrüder Weiss currently employs four people in Uzbekistan and offers land transport services (groupage and full truckloads) as well as air, sea, and rail freight. In the medium term, the service portfolio will be expanded to include warehouse logistics services.

News

The family-owned company employs more than 8,600 people worldwide and boasts 180 company-owned locations. The business presence in North America includes headquarters in Chicago and offices in Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Denver, El Paso, Houston, Laredo, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver. The logistics company’s China organization continues to deliver solid revenue growth in 2025. The rapidly expanding e-commerce sector is a key driver behind this momentum.

China’s GDP grew by 4.8 percent in Q3 2025, a slowing from the 5.2 percent growth posted earlier in the year. Trade tensions with the United States, weak domestic demand and a struggling real-estate sector are slowing the economy in China, but the picture looks different for international logistics leader, Gebrüder Weiss. By expanding its warehousing operations, including specialized e-fulfillment and e-commerce solutions, the company has secured new customers and strengthened its position as a full-service logistics provider. Key industries include automotive, machinery and electronics.

Gebrüder Weiss Greater China closed the 2024 business year with revenues of around 330 million euros (more than 380 million dollars), representing a 24 percent increase year-over-year (2023: 265 million euros/305 million dollars). Cross-border e-commerce continues to perform exceptionally well. In 2024, Gebrüder Weiss Express China shipped 25 million parcels for major online retailers to Europe, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. The European Union remains the company’s largest market and strongest growth engine.

“Our steady growth underlines the strategic importance of the Chinese market for Gebrüder Weiss and demonstrates how successfully we have evolved in recent years,” says Yongquan Chen, General Manager of Gebrüder Weiss China. “We have strong capabilities in air and sea freight, and are equally well positioned in multimodal transport, rail services, and warehouse logistics, where we deliver tailored solutions quickly and with precision.”

Gebrüder Weiss has had a presence in China for more than 30 years, opening its first office in Shanghai in 1992. The company rapidly expanded into major port cities and economic hubs throughout the country. In Qingdao, the world’s fourth-largest container port, the team recently celebrated its 30-year anniversary. Beijing, as well as the port cities Tianjin (largest port in Northern China) and Ningbo (third-largest container port worldwide), mark 25 years in the Gebrüder Weiss network this year.

Today, the organization includes 19 locations and more than 450 employees in Greater China. Over the next few years, Gebrüder Weiss China plans to further invest in electromobility and automation. The goal is to create sustainable logistics solutions and innovative services that fuel continued growth.

News
