New toll system in Baltic state Lithuania

February 19, 2015

Simultaneously with the adoption of the euro, Lithuania has revised its toll system for certain major roads. The charge is now based on emission classes and vehicle weight.

With immediate effect, the toll for certain major roads (see below) now depends on the emission classification of the vehicle and no longer exclusively on gross vehicle weight (GVW) and/or validity period. Lithuania has specified two emission classes for trucks of over 3.5 tonnes GVW: firstly, Euro 0 to Euro 3, and secondly Euro 4 or better.

The toll for light trucks and 24-hour permits has initially been excluded from the emission classes. Here, the distinction is drawn between trucks weighing less than 3.5 tonnes (€6) and more than 3.5 tonnes (€11). Trucks weighing less than 3.5 tonnes are charged €14 for a week whilst those weighing between 3.5 and twelve tonnes conforming to Euro 4 standard or better are charged €26. Trucks not meeting Euro 4 standard must pay €37. For trucks heavier than twelve tonnes, the cost is €37 or €52 respectively. The monthly toll for trucks under 3.5 tonnes is €28. The mid-range class has to pay €52 or €75 respectively, while the heaviest come in at €75 or €107 respectively. An annual vignette for a light truck costs €304, for a mid-range truck with Euro 4 certification €550, with Euro 3 or inferior €753 and for heavier trucks €753 or €1,071 respectively.

The following Lithuanian roads are affected by these new charges: A1 Vilnius-Kaunas-Klaipeda, A2 Vilnius-Panevezys, A3 Vilnius-Minsk, A4 Vilnius-Varena-Grodno, A5 Kaunas-Marijampole-Suwałki, A6 Kaunas-Zarasai-Daugavpils, A7 Marijampole-Kybartai-Kaliningrad, A8 Panevezys-Aristava-Sitkunai, A9 Panevezys-Siauliai, A10 Panevezys-Pasvalys-Riga, A11 Siauliai-Palanga, A12 Riga-Siauliai-Taurage-Kaliningrad, A13 Klaipeda-Liepaja, A14 Vilnius-Utena, A15 Vilnius-Lida, A16 Vilnius-Prienai-Marijampole, the A17 Panevezys bypass and the A18 Siauliai bypass.
