Our services at a glance 

First of all, the greenhouse gas emissions generated by a particular process, company or service, etc. are measured (carbon footprint). In the next step, compensation is effected via certificates (and emission reduction credits), through which the volume of emissions is balanced out by way of climate-protection projects.

EcoTransIT is used to compute the volume of CO2 emissions, with the Transport Management System (TMS) at Gebrüder Weiss providing the data basis. This methodology factors in all legs of a transport process as well as the specific transport modes deployed.

The formula used by EcoTransIT to calculate emissions is consistent with the European standard DIN EN 16258 and the GLEC Framework.

Example: Transport of a pallet from A / Austria to B / Hungary

Given an assumed price of 15 euros per metric ton of CO2, and CO2 emissions between A and B of 0.04296 metric tons, the shipment is fully compensated by 65 eurocents (15 euros x 0.04296 metric tons/ CO2). Gebrüder Weiss invests the 65 eurocents from the customer in a certified climate-protection project, thereby completely offsetting the emissions.

 

    Despite efforts on all sides, CO2 is still generated during most transport operations. That said, climate-protection projects can compensate for these emissions, e.g. by reforesting woodlands and increasing the use of renewable energies. Independent organizations monitor the emissions generated and calculate the countervailing measures required to offset them. Under the Gebrüder Weiss zero emissions program, these steps are performed promptly and precisely.

      The customer receives a certificate from us that confirms the contribution and shows that all the emissions incurred have been fully offset.

        Nigeria

        "Toyola Clean Cookstoves"

        Less deforestation due to reduced burning of wood. In this Nigerian project, conventional stoves are being replaced by far more efficient models known as Toyola Coalpots. Households adopting the new stoves cut their energy consumption by about 30% per year, translating into savings of 80 euros. In addition to the fuel savings, the lower emission levels also reduce air pollution. This improves general health levels among the Nigerian population.

        Malawi

        "Borehole Project Dowa and Kasungu"

        Improving living conditions with clean water. Poor hygiene, substandard sanitation facilities and a lack of clean water are among the main causes of poverty in Africa. Without access to clean drinking water, the prospects of escaping the poverty trap are very slim. The Malawi Borehole Project provides dedicated supplies to local communities.

        Austria / China

        "Combined Climate-Protection Project"

        This project consists of two parts. The Jinchuan Magang 49.5MW Wind Power Project whose purpose it is to install and produce renewable electricity with 33 sets of 1.5MW wind turbine generators and therefore reduce some 90,000 metric tons CO2 per year. Additionally, 2.50 euros are donated for each CO2 certificate to forest ecology projects in Western Austria's Montafon Valley.

        Brazil

        "Pacajai Redd + Project"

        Sustainable forest management that safeguards valuable eco-systems. This climate-protection project helps village communities in the valley of Jari / Amapá to prevent the clearing of surrounding woodlands. The primary aim is to preserve some 180,000 hectares of forest. As part of the project, villagers receive special training in how to encourage sustainable woodland use among new residents and how to foster cooperation in the field of forest protection.

        India

        "Solar Power Project"

        Clean energy thanks to solar power. The project includes the construction and operation of a photovoltaic plant near the village of Thirumani in the state of Karnataka. The solar park has a total installed capacity of 100 MW and produces around 181 GWh of clean electricity annually. Taking average per capita consumption in India as a base, the project will be able to meet the annual electricity needs of 225,000 people in a sustainable way.

        Peru

        "Brazil Nut Rainforest Community Project"

        Sustainable brazil nut cultivation to protect woodlands. The work of the climate-protection project Brazil Nut Rainforest Community is focused on preserving the virgin rainforests which are the home and habitat of an array of rare and endangered flora and fauna. Through its work, the project offers a long-term source of income for some 400 families engaged in the traditional harvesting of brazil nuts.
