Koper, Innsbruck, Lauterach - 11.10.2006 00:00:00
The Slovenian port of Koper is gaining more and more importance for foreign trade in Central and Eastern Europe. It has grown at a rapid rate during recent years and established itself as a new logistics hub in global trading. On 1 October, Gebrüder Weiss opened their own office in the port of Koper.
"In 2005, the cargo handling volume of Austrian companies at the port of Koper increased by a sound 18.8% compared to the previous year," says Michael Büchele, Regional Manager at Gebrüder Weiss. And there are in fact several reasons for the port boom in the Adriatic, one of which is the increase in bottlenecks at Northern European ports. "As far as we are concerned, Koper now belongs to the most important sea ports along with Rotterdam, Hamburg and Trieste. Opening the office in Koper was a logical development step in the extension of our worldwide network." The office is managed by seafreight expert Bostjan Pavlin. It is particularly customers from the region – Austria, Slovenia and Croatia – that benefit from the presence of GW staff right within the port area. "There are constantly delays in the Northern ports as they battle with their capacities and timing prognoses are difficult. Here on the Adriatic, processes can be easily calculated," explains Büchele. "There are also price benefits in collection and delivery: Koper is closer."
Büchele sees new opportunities with the new location at Koper, but also in terms of total logistics concepts. "For companies with target markets in South East Europe, Koper is a good location for a logistics centre. We are certainly ready for further growth."
