1972: The company form of Gebrüder Weiss is changed from OHG (general partnership) to GmbH (limited liability). Building and modernisation of facilities and internationalisation of the business are simultaneously promoted.
1974: The oil shock with a rise in energy prices of 70% at 12 dollars per barrel sparks a world economic crisis. Shortly afterwards, the branches in Switzerland and Lindau which had been leased out since the Second World War become independent subsidiary companies again. Introduction of the computer in accounting.
1980: Creation of the GW Group with holding structure.
1985: Relocation of the headquarters from Bregenz to the nearby town of Lauterach after 113 years. Opening of the site by Federal President Dr. Rudolf Kirchschläger
1988: The parcel service APS Austria Paket System is established with two Austrian partners and quickly becomes market leader within the B2B area in Austria. The international parcel service is operated in close co-operation with DPD (Direct Parcel Distribution).
1989: After the fall of the "Iron Curtain", Gebrüder Weiss expands to the neighbouring Central and Eastern European countries (CEEC), beginning with the neighbouring Countries. Branches are established in Budapest, Prague, Brno, Bratislava, Maribor and Ljubljana. The first branch is established in the Far East in Shanghai, followed by a branch in Quingdao shortly afterwards.
1995: On 1 January Austria joins the European Union. Gebrüder Weiss loses a large chunk of its customs business to the domestic market which accounts for a third of its real net output. Through an extensive reorganisation of all procedures (Business Process Reengineering) and the intensive commitment of all partners, GW emerges stronger from this crisis and exploits the new opportunities offered by the extended market.
